About the M5 Corpus

The M5 Corpus is a mid-wheel drive powerchair from Permobil. Permobil made it for users who want more speed, stronger motors, a higher seat lift and good grip and stability on varied ground. Its suspension works independently on all six wheels. Their first manual calls it a chair for indoor use that can be used outdoors with restrictions, as it is not an all-terrain chair; their later manuals and product data say indoor and outdoor use. Each chair was ordered for its first user, so the seat size, controls and powered functions vary from chair to chair. Permobil have made three model versions.

The top speed is up to 12 km/h (7.5 mph); some chairs are 6, 8 or 10 km/h. Permobil's manuals give a driving range of about 25 km (15.5 miles) at a battery temperature of 25°C. The later manuals' specification tables say 29 km (18 miles), and their 2023 data sheet says 40 km on its 85Ah batteries. Hills, rough ground, cold weather and older batteries all shorten it. It climbs obstacles up to 50 mm from a standstill, or 100 mm with a 50 cm run-up. Permobil say to take care on slopes steeper than 6° and never to drive on slopes steeper than 10°. Ground clearance is 90 mm. It runs on two 12 V 85Ah batteries and charges through a socket at the front of the joystick (the first manual says those chairs can also be charged at the base).

The Corpus seat is 420 to 570 mm wide and 370 to 570 mm deep, depending on the chair. Some chairs have Active Height, a powered seat lift of up to 350 mm that you can still drive on at up to 5 km/h when it is fully raised. Some have Active Reach, which tilts the seat forward by up to 20°. Some have powered tilt back of up to 50°, a powered backrest, powered legrests or LED lights.

It is 650 to 790 mm wide and 1113 mm long, and weighs 194 kg with batteries. For transport the backrest folds down or comes off. Permobil's later manuals and product data say it meets ISO 7176-19, so the user can stay seated in it, facing forward, in a suitable vehicle, although Permobil recommend moving to a vehicle seat whenever you can.
