Cookies

A few small files keep this website working. Google's cookies, which tell us which of our adverts work, are used only if you say yes.

The short version

  • Four small files, called cookies, make the shop work: your basket, form protection, one-off notices and your answer to our cookie message.
  • Stripe, the company that takes our payments, sets two more on the checkout page only, to help keep payments safe.
  • If you say yes on our cookie message, Google sets cookies that tell us which of our Google adverts bring people here, and how the site is used. If you say no, or ignore the message, nothing from Google loads.
  • We never use cookies to show you adverts around the web, and we never send Google anything about your health or VAT relief.
  • You can change your answer at any time: press "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your device. It lets the site remember something from one page to the next, such as which machine is in your basket.

Our own cookies

All four are set by usedmobility.uk, and no other company can read them. None of them is shared with anyone.

  • Your basket (sessionid). It remembers your basket as you move from page to page, and keeps trade partners and our staff signed in. The cookie is just a random code: your basket is stored on our server, and this code tells the server which basket is yours. It lasts 14 days.
  • Form protection (csrftoken). A random code that proves a form really came from our own pages, so no other website can send a form pretending to be you. It lasts one year.
  • One-off notices (messages). This carries a short note to the next page you open, such as "message sent", and is deleted as soon as the notice appears.
  • Your cookie answer (um_consent). It remembers whether you said yes or no to Google's cookies, so we don't ask again on every page. It lasts 6 months.

These are strictly necessary to run the shop, keep forms secure and remember your answer, so the law lets us set them without asking.

Google's cookies: only if you say yes

We advertise on Google. To know which adverts bring customers, and to understand how people use the site, we use Google Ads and Google Analytics. They load only after you press "Accept" on our cookie message, and then Google sets:

  • _gcl_au (Google Ads): connects a visit to the Google advert you clicked, so we can see which adverts lead to a sale or an enquiry. It lasts 90 days.
  • _ga and _ga_ followed by a code (Google Analytics): count visits and pages anonymously, so we can see where people arrive from and where they leave. They last 13 months.

We have switched off Google's features that build advertising profiles or show you our adverts again because you visited us (remarketing, Google signals and ad personalisation). When you buy, Google is told the order reference, the machine and the amount, and nothing about who it is for, your health or VAT relief. Google uses this information to provide these services to us; its privacy policy explains more (policies.google.com/privacy).

If you say no, nothing from Google loads, and the website works exactly the same. If you said yes and change your mind, press "Cookie settings" and choose "Reject": we stop loading Google and remove its cookies from our website on your device.

Stripe's cookies: checkout page only

Stripe takes our payments. The checkout page loads Stripe's payment form, which is where you type your card details. When the checkout page opens, Stripe sets two cookies of its own to help stop card fraud:

  • __stripe_mid: lasts 1 year. It helps Stripe recognise a device it has seen before.
  • __stripe_sid: lasts 30 minutes.

To spot fraud, Stripe's payment form also looks at how your device and browser are set up and how the checkout page is used. Stripe uses this to prevent fraud, not for advertising.

If you choose to pay with Link, Stripe's saved-card checkout, Stripe can remember you on that device so it can fill in your details next time. That is part of Link, which you choose, and Link's own terms apply to it.

Stripe decides how it uses the information these cookies collect, so for that information Stripe is a separate data controller and its privacy policy applies (stripe.com/gb/privacy). If you never open the checkout page, Stripe sets nothing.

Your bank may ask you to confirm a payment, for example with a code or in your banking app. That check comes from your bank, and your bank's own rules apply to it.

Why we ask, and how

The law on cookies is the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003. A website must ask your permission before storing anything on your device that isn't strictly necessary. Google's measuring cookies aren't strictly necessary, so we ask first.

Most of our customers are older, and many are disabled, so we keep the message short, with two large buttons of equal size, "Accept" and "Reject". Nothing is ticked for you in advance, and the site works the same whichever you choose.

What we don't do

  • We don't use the Facebook (Meta) pixel or any other company's advertising tag.
  • We don't show you adverts around the internet because you visited us.
  • We don't record your screen, your typing or your mouse. (Stripe's fraud checks on the checkout page are described above.)
  • We never sell your details or pass them to data brokers.
  • We don't load anything else from other companies' servers. Our pictures are on our own server, and even the typefaces come from our own server. The exceptions are Stripe's payment form on the checkout page and, only if you say yes, Google's measuring tags.

The "Open in Google Maps" link on our Contact page is an ordinary link. Nothing from Google Maps loads unless you click it. Once you do, you are on Google's website and Google's cookie rules apply.

For our staff only

Our staff use a photo tool on the phone or tablet they use for work, and it keeps two things on that device: the camera brightness setting (um-qc-brightness), so the staff member doesn't have to set it again each time, and a store of photos still waiting to upload (um-capture), so that no photos are lost if the signal drops. Each photo is removed from that store once it has been sent. The brightness setting is a convenience rather than strictly necessary: it is saved only when a staff member changes the brightness on that device. Customers never see this tool, and it stores nothing on customers' devices.

If this ever changes

If we ever want to use another company's cookies, we will update this page first, and ask you before they are set.

Controlling cookies yourself

You can delete or block cookies in your browser's settings, usually under "Privacy". If you block our own four cookies, your basket and the checkout won't work, because those cookies are what makes them work. If you have any trouble, ring us on 03330 540 630.
