Sunrise Medical · rear-wheel drive powerchair
Used Sunrise Medical Q500R
The QUICKIE Q500 R is a rear-wheel drive powerchair from Sunrise Medical, with the SEDEO PRO seat. Sunrise say a rear-wheel drive base suits outdoor use over rough ground and up hills: they rate the Q500 R for slopes up to 10 degrees and kerbs up to 80 mm (100 mm with the optional kerb climber). It carries up to 136 kg on a chair with C-Me (which drives with the seat raised), or 160 kg on other chairs. It suits someone who spends a lot of time outdoors and wants a well-adjusted seat, and who has room at home for a chair up to 1180 mm long.

Before you buy a used Q500R
How fast does the Q500 R go, and how far?
It depends on the motors fitted: Sunrise list 6, 8, 10 or 13 km/h (3.7, 5, 6.2 or 8 mph); their owner's manual gives the fastest as 12.5 km/h (7.7 mph). With 80Ah batteries Sunrise's owner's manual gives 32.5 to 40 km (20.1 to 24.8 miles) on the 6 km/h motors and 25 to 32.5 km (15.5 to 20.1 miles) on the fastest; their UK page says up to 40 km. They give no figure for 50Ah or 60Ah batteries. Obstacles, rough ground, slopes, freezing weather and frequent use of the powered seat all shorten the range.
What can it climb?
Slopes up to 10 degrees, and kerbs up to 80 mm, or 100 mm on a chair with the optional kerb climber.
What is the maximum user weight?
136 kg (21 st 5 lb) on a chair with C-Me (driving while raised), and 160 kg (25 st 2 lb) on other chairs with the SEDEO PRO seat. Sunrise's UK page gives 160 kg; the lower figure is in their owner's manual, which also gives 136 kg for the SEDEO LITE seat (Sunrise UK do not list that seat for the Q500 R). If the user is over 136 kg, ask us whether this chair has C-Me.
Will it work indoors?
It is 615 to 640 mm wide, depending on the drive wheels, at most 1180 mm long, and turns within a 950 mm radius. Sunrise's brochure gives 1285 mm of space to turn round (their owner's manual says 1258 mm). Sunrise give a seat height from 415 mm, which they say helps with getting under tables and into wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Can it travel in a vehicle?
Yes. It is crash tested (ISO 7176-19), so the user can travel seated in it, facing forward, in a suitable wheelchair accessible vehicle. It weighs from 133 kg with batteries.
