Before you buy a used Komfi Rider Marlin

How fast and how far does the Marlin go?

Up to 4 mph, and a dial on the tiller lets you set it slower. How far depends on the battery. Komfi-Rider gives up to 20 miles on the 21Ah Endurance battery and up to 30 miles on the 34Ah Epic battery. These are its best figures: a heavier rider, hills, rough ground, cold weather and a worn battery all shorten them.

Why does each listing look different?

Each Marlin was sold with one of two lithium batteries: the 21Ah Endurance or the larger 34Ah Epic, which goes further and weighs 2 kg more. Some have air-filled tyres and some solid puncture-proof ones. Each listing says what that scooter has, and we're happy to go through it on the phone.

Will it go in my car boot?

It comes apart without tools into five pieces: the basket, the front section, the rear section, the seat and the battery box. The heaviest piece weighs 11.9 kg. Put together it is 116 cm long, 56 cm wide and 92 cm high. Komfi-Rider suggests two people lift the front section if possible. Check the pieces against your boot before you buy.

What is the maximum user weight, and can it manage hills?

135 kg (21 stone). The heavier the rider, the gentler the slope it should climb. Komfi-Rider's manual chart gives 0° to 2° at 135 kg, 4° at 80 kg and 6° at 52 kg (6° is the figure in its specification). The manual also says to avoid long ramps and hills. Always go straight up or down a slope, never across it.

How is the battery charged?

With the 2 A lithium charger, either on the scooter through the socket on the tiller, or off the scooter through the socket on the battery box, so you can charge it indoors. Komfi-Rider advises against charging above 30°C or below 10°C, and says not to leave a lithium battery charging unattended.

Is it the same as the Marlin Sport?

No. The Marlin Sport is a different Komfi-Rider model that goes up to 8 mph. This page is for the 4 mph Marlin.
