Before you buy a used Alpha 8
How fast does the Alpha 8 go, and can I use it on the road?
Up to 8 mph, which makes it a Class 3 road scooter. A High/Low switch limits it to 4 mph for pavements, and a dial on the tiller lets you set it slower still.
How far will it go on a charge?
Up to 25 miles (40 km), by One Rehab's figure. It says the distance depends on the rider's weight and the ground. Its manual adds that cold weather, charging too seldom and worn batteries all shorten it.
What is the maximum user weight?
One Rehab's papers disagree. Its current spec sheet says 21 stone (about 133 kg), but prints 160 kg beside it. Its user manual and earlier spec sheet say 25 stone (160 kg). To be safe, go by 21 stone, or ask us before you buy. The steepest slope it should climb is 9°.
Will it fit in my car?
No, it is not a boot scooter. It weighs 104 kg with its batteries. The seat and basket lift off without tools and the tiller folds down, which brings it to 90 cm high, but the rest stays in one piece. One Rehab says it is not meant to be used as a seat in a vehicle.
How do I charge it?
Plug the 5 A charger into the socket on the side of the tiller, so you do not have to bend down. A full charge can take up to 12 hours. If the battery gauge has reached red, One Rehab says to charge it for at least 16 hours. One Rehab advises against charging above 30°C or below 10°C.
