Karma Mobility · folding powerchair

Used Karma Mobility Falcon

The Karma Falcon (model KP-25.2) is a folding powerchair for short and medium trips, indoors and out. Its aluminium frame folds without tools and the batteries lift out, which makes it easier to transport. It goes up to 6 km/h (3.7 mph), a pavement speed, and it is from 590 mm wide, so it suits tight doorways and lifts.

Before you buy a used Falcon

How fast does the Falcon go, and how far?

Up to 6 km/h (3.7 mph), a pavement speed. Karma's 2007 brochure gives up to 30 km (about 18 miles) on 40Ah batteries; their current page gives up to 32 km (about 19 miles) on 50Ah batteries. Those are the maker's figures: the rider's weight, hills, cold weather and older batteries all shorten it.

Does it fold, and can it go in a car?

Yes, it folds without tools, to 755 mm long, 380 to 395 mm wide and 910 mm high. The two batteries lift out first (Karma's manual warns that the battery weighs 18 kg). The heaviest part then weighs about 30 to 32 kg, so think about who will lift it.

What is the maximum user weight?

115 kg with solid tyres, or 135 kg on a chair with pneumatic (air) tyres.

What can it climb?

Kerbs up to 50 mm, says Karma's spec table (the manual's text says 55 mm), or up to 80 mm with the optional kerb climber. For slopes, Karma's table gives 6° for stability uphill and 12° as the slope it can climb.

Can I travel seated in it in a vehicle?

Karma's current page and manual say the KP-25.2 is crash tested to ISO 7176-19, for use as a seat in a suitably adapted vehicle with a four-point tie-down. The manual says to do this only in a chair that carries Karma's hook-mark labels, and the 2007 brochure does not mention a crash test, so check the chair. Karma still recommend moving to the vehicle seat when you can.
