Used Karma Mobility Ergo Stand

The Karma Ergo Stand (model KP-80) is a front-wheel drive powerchair with a powered lift that takes the user from sitting to standing, worked from the joystick. The backrest reclines under power too. It turns in a tight space, and Karma Mobility UK described it as ideal for indoor use. Karma say a clinician should first check that standing suits the user.

Before you buy a used Ergo Stand

How does the standing work?

A powered lift raises the user from sitting to standing, with a knee support and chest strap to hold them. You choose the stand function on the controller, then push the joystick forward to stand and back to sit. Karma's manual says a clinician should first confirm that standing suits the user, to stand up only on flat ground, and that the chair drives at half speed while standing.

What is the maximum user weight?

Karma Mobility UK's 2019 page says 115 kg. Their earlier pages gave 135 kg (17-inch seat) or 130 kg (19-inch seat), and Karma's current figures say 135 kg. We go by the lowest figure, 115 kg.

How fast and how far does it go?

Karma's spec table gives a top speed of 9.3 km/h (about 5.8 mph) and a range of up to 25.9 km (about 16 miles) on 50Ah batteries. Those are the maker's figures; the rider's weight, hills, cold weather and older batteries all shorten the range.

Can it be used outdoors?

Karma's manual classes it as an indoor (Class A) chair, and Karma Mobility UK described it as ideal for indoor use. It climbs kerbs up to 50 mm, says the manual (60 mm in the spec table), and has 60 mm of ground clearance.

Can I travel seated in it in a vehicle?

No. Karma say it has not been crash tested to ISO 7176-19, so the user should move to a vehicle seat and the chair should travel secured separately.
